Oh you know, a little of this, a little of that.

Dawn of Victory is a modification currently in development for the RTS/4X game; Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a “total conversion” replacing the games original models, textures, UI elements, and gameplay to create an entirely new and original experience.

It is our goal with Dawn of Victory to “maintain depth, but shift focus”, taking the things that made Sins of a Solar Empire a truly enjoyable game, and apply them to a different set of rules.

Above all, the team behind Dawn of Victory is committed to only releasing a product we can be proud of. While we pride ourselves on the quality of our art assets and aesthetics changes, we hope the true value of our mod is the unique and engaging gameplay.

The storyline behind Dawn of Victory was originally little more than an excuse to create what we thought would be a unique and fantastic backdrop for the game. Loosely based on the “WorldWar” series of books by Harry Turtledove, we wanted to take the atmosphere that made World War II games so compelling, and transport it into a space opera setting.

Over time however, our backstory has grown into an expansive universe, spanning over 300 years of alternate history. Our community driven wiki, dedicated to the story behind the mod has grown to over 500 pages, with hundreds of individual contributors.

  • New Ship Classes: Corvettes, interceptors, and more.
  • Redesigned Combat Model: Small caliber weapons may be effective against strike craft and frigates, but against heavy armor they won't make a dent.
  • Original Art Assets: Different factions have unique architectural styles and approaches to ship design. All assets have been created expressly for the mod.
  • Enhanced Ship Customization: Mount different equipment on your ships to achieve greater tactical flexibility.
  • New Doctrine Trees: Specialize your faction's approach to combat and more through purchasing unique abilities and bonuses.
  • Redesigned User Interface: The game's interface has been reimagined to fit both the style and gameplay changes inherent to Dawn of Victory.

The Soviet Union relies on overwhelming firepower rather than subtlety to achieve victory. Soviet frigates and cruisers are well rounded and cost effective, but the true strength of the Red Fleet lies in its capital ships. The Soviet economy is vulnerable however, and must be protected until it is in a position to dominate.
Image
Kriegsmarine corvettes and frigates are the mainstay of German strategy. When properly deployed they can harass and intercept enemy units before escaping serious retribution. By denying their opponents the room to expand, the Greater German Reich can force their enemies into a vulnerable position before delivering the final blow with cruisers and capital ships.
Image

The Democratic Federation combines the best elements of the American, Andrean, British and French fleets. Large numbers of specialized ships are available, and when properly coordinated, become effective against nearly every threat.

Applicants would ideally be familiar with UV mapping, and be proficient at recognizing existing unit styles and applying them faithfully either from a concept or working with a group to come up with a design. Models typically range from 1k to 6k polies. Each unit mesh will have only only one UV channel, as the engine limits us to one texture per mesh.
Image

Applicants should be familiar with normal and specular maps and have a commitment to detail. The art direction of the mod calls for mostly realistic texturing with some room for stylistic exaggerations; experience with generating "greeble" and weathering are a must. Texture resolutions range from 1024 square to 4096 square.

no because we hate you

on Aug 07, 2010

Hate is good... Could you at least give us an update here on how things are going with development plz?

The lore and everything you've been doing this past year, or has it been more, is great. It's got more depth than the actual game itself. Come on they didn't even explain what's been following the vasari...

My argument is, what's the point of joining forums and whatnot if eventually the game will never come out.

on Aug 07, 2010

We are still working on the mod but we are also busy with jobs/school/whatever. We have a schedule we’ve been following that includes an estimated release date, however we are not willing to make any of these estimates public, as modding timetables are anything but concrete.

The team behind Dawn of Victory takes the mod seriously and under no circumstances will we release anything that isn’t up to our standards. Several of our contributors have used their work on DoV as part of their resumes to get jobs within the industry, and it would be a betrayal if we rushed out something that cheapened the hard work they put into this project.

on Aug 07, 2010

Oh oh, so you have an estimate!

Well i might ship out to some nasty ass desert soon so id like to try it before that. Any chanse youll make christmas?

for every iraqi child killed the release will be moved up a month get to it

on Aug 10, 2010

@Swiss Knight... I didn't mean any disrespect or to to demean your or anybody's work. It's just that SoaSE was the first game which was worth buying and still is. I've gobbled up every mod that came out, and every DoV story that is released just makes its final release feel tentatively near...

If the lore behind the game and the dedication shown by the developers is any measure of a game's worth, then yours could surely compete with the actual game...

This is the eternal problem with mods.  They promise so much...and sometimes deliver....but the wait, beta testing, and brush fires that crop up in their development are so frustrating ( both for the player and the creator(s) ) that they often die in the womb or are stillborn.  It also doesn't help that those that create mods usually get little respect for their hard work and are constantly bombarded with requests from an in-grateful public that can only be sustained by instant gratification.

Maybe this mod will come to fruition, or maybe it will go the same way as so many others.  I don't know.  I do know that...I've seen this mod for a long time and the only thing that seems to come out are more short story's and new portraits of an alternative universe that only leaves people wanting.

Dawn of Victory is actually just a huge troll account, when we do release, the Sins community will be stunned to learn that DoV is actually for Star Wars: Battlefront 2.

on Aug 15, 2010

The difference between us and most TC mods with respect to updates and release dates is that we:

1. Started on a completely different engine years ago with drastically lower requirements and a completely different gameplay model. DoV for Sins has absolutely nothing in common from what DoV was back in Empire at War. The models and skins we did for EaW have either been replaced or nearly replaced.

2. Have gotten very little support from the actual game's community, modding or otherwise: most of our fanbase comes from people that were interested in the setting instead. This has not only limited our tester pool because not all of our fanbase actually has the game, but also constricted our team size substantially, meaning it's easier for us to get burnt out on stuff with nobody to take over. I know from experience, as I'm the only scripter and sometimes doing everything from map design to galaxyscenariodef editing to entities to writing buffs to debugging model issues to making spreadsheets to track balance and game design issues etc gets kind of tiresome!

3. Don't release unfinished stuff, which means news posts are set farther apart.

So we're naturally at a disadvantage when it comes to letting people know what's in the pipeline and when you should expect it. I really would have loved to just start the hype machine going when we started doing internal alphas, but based on when the mod was actually created (years ago), we didn't have that luxury. I always hated being on the other end of the whole "if you don't like how fast it's coming along, chip in yourself" thing as it's kind of a snotty, elitist attitude to have when it's normally the developers' choice that they hyped up the mod far in advance, but in this case it's all I'm left with.

@Carbon016....

Thanks for the explanation/update.  Good luck on the mod and to those that are using it on their Resume.  I look forward to the mods completion.

Soviet Offensive Opens on Vega

Peter Billsbridge

In a renewed attempt to seize the initiative on Vega, Red Army forces, in conjunction with the New Weimar Volksheer, made a determined push on the capital of Bracken this week. The assault inflicted terrible losses on both sides in some of the fiercest fighting in the last century. Included in the offensive were elite troops from theChinese Soviet Socialist Republic, which were reported to have landed on Vega sometime in the last week.

A simultaneous action took place in orbit, as Soviet cruisers renewed sporadic orbital bombardment against targets of opportunity on the planet's surface. Orbital bombardment on Vega had lessened in the recent weeks while German and Soviet units were equipped with specialized equipment capable of operating within the immense ash clouds that have become commonplace within the combat area.

French Warship Feared Destroyed

Thomas Kensley

The destroyer Montcalm of the Marine Nationale is believed to have been destroyed after failing to arrive at Alpha Centauri. The Montcalm was one of seven ships of a joint task force evacuating French, American, and British citizens from the New Weimar Republic. Both the Soviet and German governments have expressed their condolences, and while some have postulated the ship may have been destroyed or captured by the local criminal element, a representative of the French Armed Forces has said that no independent groups operating in the region have the capability to destroy a Charlemagne Class Destroyer. Protests have erupted outside Soviet and German embassies throughout the French Republic.

Rigel Kentaurus Raises Travel Advisory for Juno

Jane Perry

The Federative Republic of Rigel Kentaurus has raised the travel advisory risk level for the Juno system citing increased Soviet activity in the system and fears the Soviet-German conflict could spread. Rigel Kentaurus joins the Commonwealth of Tau Ceti and the United States, who in recent weeks have recommended that all non-essential travel to Juno be avoided. No open conflict has been observed in the system, but the staunchly pro-Soviet governments in the system have raised their military readiness levels, and have expressed their resolve in "defending our worlds from any unwarranted German aggression".
