Oh you know, a little of this, a little of that.

Dawn of Victory is a modification currently in development for the RTS/4X game; Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a “total conversion” replacing the games original models, textures, UI elements, and gameplay to create an entirely new and original experience.

It is our goal with Dawn of Victory to “maintain depth, but shift focus”, taking the things that made Sins of a Solar Empire a truly enjoyable game, and apply them to a different set of rules.

Above all, the team behind Dawn of Victory is committed to only releasing a product we can be proud of. While we pride ourselves on the quality of our art assets and aesthetics changes, we hope the true value of our mod is the unique and engaging gameplay.

The storyline behind Dawn of Victory was originally little more than an excuse to create what we thought would be a unique and fantastic backdrop for the game. Loosely based on the “WorldWar” series of books by Harry Turtledove, we wanted to take the atmosphere that made World War II games so compelling, and transport it into a space opera setting.

Over time however, our backstory has grown into an expansive universe, spanning over 300 years of alternate history. Our community driven wiki, dedicated to the story behind the mod has grown to over 500 pages, with hundreds of individual contributors.

  • New Ship Classes: Corvettes, interceptors, and more.
  • Redesigned Combat Model: Small caliber weapons may be effective against strike craft and frigates, but against heavy armor they won't make a dent.
  • Original Art Assets: Different factions have unique architectural styles and approaches to ship design. All assets have been created expressly for the mod.
  • Enhanced Ship Customization: Mount different equipment on your ships to achieve greater tactical flexibility.
  • New Doctrine Trees: Specialize your faction's approach to combat and more through purchasing unique abilities and bonuses.
  • Redesigned User Interface: The game's interface has been reimagined to fit both the style and gameplay changes inherent to Dawn of Victory.

The Soviet Union relies on overwhelming firepower rather than subtlety to achieve victory. Soviet frigates and cruisers are well rounded and cost effective, but the true strength of the Red Fleet lies in its capital ships. The Soviet economy is vulnerable however, and must be protected until it is in a position to dominate.
Image
Kriegsmarine corvettes and frigates are the mainstay of German strategy. When properly deployed they can harass and intercept enemy units before escaping serious retribution. By denying their opponents the room to expand, the Greater German Reich can force their enemies into a vulnerable position before delivering the final blow with cruisers and capital ships.

The Democratic Federation combines the best elements of the American, Andrean, British and French fleets. Large numbers of specialized ships are available, and when properly coordinated, become effective against nearly every threat.

Applicants would ideally be familiar with UV mapping, and be proficient at recognizing existing unit styles and applying them faithfully either from a concept or working with a group to come up with a design. Models typically range from 1k to 6k polies. Each unit mesh will have only only one UV channel, as the engine limits us to one texture per mesh.
Image

Applicants should be familiar with normal and specular maps and have a commitment to detail. The art direction of the mod calls for mostly realistic texturing with some room for stylistic exaggerations; experience with generating "greeble" and weathering are a must. Texture resolutions range from 1024 square to 4096 square.

Uh huh.  Looking forward to the mod, but ive been seeing it TBD since....forever.

Yup. They add a tally mark every time someone complains about how long its taking. When it is actually ready for release, they will wait an extra day for each tally mark. So actual no, it never will be released.

JEP, I fully agree with you.

I am happy that there are good mods available.

For example your (Requiem) and ZombiesRus5 (Sins of the Fallen) mods are awesome.

Thus, I don't care when other mods will be released. In particular Dawn of victory because I waited to long.

Wow, you're unpleasant.

I won't be impolite. But I share the opinion of GoaFan, that Dawn of victory will never be released.
I appreciative the effort of every modder. I like mods very much, because some improves the game dramatically.
I am only a little disappointed after I watched this topic over years.

Not as disappointed as I am reading the replies in this topic over the years.

The amount of disrespect in this thread is offensive.

on Feb 01, 2012

that's to be expected... a lot of non-modders expect to be handed candy on a platter without so much as a thank you by the people who pour their sweat, tears and blood into a project. If there is one thing I know... people and I mean a lot of people lack one fundamental thing when it comes down to what modders/game developers do. PATIENCE

The amount of disrespect in this thread is offensive.

Let’s not go overboard here, nothing said here is really new or unexpected, in fact it's a lot more polite then most of the criticism we receive.

We started this project in 2006, but it’s not really reasonable to call that the “mod start date” anymore as literally everything has changed since then. DoV in its current state really began in 2008 when we scrapped all our then-made assets and had a detailed discussion of what we wanted to do.

I think it’s fair though to point out that it’s been a long time, and I’m not surprised some people think this mod will never come out and I don’t really care when people express doubt over the fate of this project.

What does bother me though is the sense of entitlement some people have, if DoV was cancelled tomorrow, nobody besides those of us who have worked on the project would have lost anything of consequence. We don’t ask for donations, we are not charging for alpha access or anything else, we wouldn’t owe anyone so much as an apology if we cancelled DoV.

As depressed as any fan or follower of this project may be, I can assure you that nobody wants Dawn of Victory released more than me and the people on our team. We did not put in thousands of hours of effort into this project on a whim.

More than anything I want to see Dawn of Victory released and I really do mean that. It’s become such a big part of my life and I’m so thankful to everyone who put in their time and energy into this thing. When we do finish it, I can assure you the very next day we will be planning out next effort as I can’t imagine a life that didn’t include working with those people on something, anything.

What I will never do though is release anything that doesn’t meet the standards set by Dawn of Victory. That’s why you don’t see untextured models, that’s why you don’t see works in progress and that’s why you don’t see an open alpha or beta.

When me, and those of us on the project all agree it's ready to release, that will be the release day.

tldr: It's me, I was Danman all along.

What's also being failed to understand by guys who just complain about it is that this is not just a total conversion mod. It really isn't. Sins of a Galactic Empire is a total conversion mod. There's no more TEC, Advent, or Vasari, and that's about it. They've redone all the units, even redone the buildings. And going from 1.0 to 2.0 which was essentially just a rebalance with redone buildings and only two new factions was a two year gig.

Dawn of Victory is doing a whole lot more than just two more factions built up on a total conversion. They're redoing the UI, the menu, all the units (I've noticed a sort of Borderlands stylish pop to all the units, but that's just me. I think it's rad), and all the buildings, while redoing the entire economy and replacing everything that was once Sins of a Solar Empire. It will barely resemble that game at the end so much that if I understand correctly, the single-player AI will barely function outside of it's own home planet. I understand all of this and I am not on the team. The things they know and we don't must be staggering.

With that being said, of course it's going to take a long time compared to the SoaGE example I just laid out. And they aren't being paid. And they have real life things to deal with, just like we do.  So it'll take a few years. So what? Give me a mod that already looks and seems this amazing that didn't take more than a year to develop. Hell, give me any total conversion mod that took more than a year or two to develop and complete. They don't exist.

TL;DR? Ignore the haters, Swiss Knight. We know it's gonna take a while, but it's worth it. We got you.

And going from 1.0 to 2.0 which was essentially just a rebalance with redone buildings and only two new factions was a two year gig.

While I don't want to derail this thread, I want to address this point. From 1.0 to 2.0 you had a complete shift in mod staff. To be blunt, the people who worked on 1.0 and earlier simply do not have the time to work on the mod anymore. I came onto SoGE a little over a year before 2.0's release; that was when the changes really kicked into high gear. Before then, the project was virtually abandoned for months. We were also without a modeler until mid December; the models being used were purely what was current in the beta and whatever I could convert from various EaW mods.

Anyways, to those who complain and bemoan the lack of a release and such, seriously just stop. The DoV team has put in a helluva lot of time and effort into their mod, they are determined to get things done, and done the way they want it to be. If a release was rushed out of the door today, would it meet the standard of quality that people so eagerly await? The answer to that question is why such a thing isn't happening.

tl;dr: Kudos to you and the rest of the team Swiss Knight and keep up the good fi- err... I mean modding.

I wasn't trying to belittle what you guys were doing at SoaGE. I love it. You guys have relly done some great work. I was jus trying to put some perspective for the people who keep complaining. I apologize if that was taken in a way other than what I meant.

It's kind of funny thinking that once DoV does actually come out, everyone is going to completely forget how much they complained about how long it took. I really do think it's turning out fantastic, from what we simple plebs are allowed to see in terms of progress.

on Feb 02, 2012

Since im not a modder I dont know the details of modding, however speaking for us "player only" types I think the frustration you hear is due to the years its taking to finish the mod.  That if anything should speak to how excited people are for the mod.

I just dont want to find us playing SoSE Rebellion V5 before we ever see this mod.

on Feb 02, 2012

is today incredibly obvious yet patronizing rhetoric day because i've been waiting for that for years too. i've had this huge spiral-bound notebook full of the blandest stuff i can think of like "i hope humanity doesn't perish in a massive nuclear holocaust" and "i hope some guy not associated with a mod team never makes a condescending pronouncement worded as if they had a say in its release schedule" sitting around seemingly forever

I was sad to see this thread so far back in the forum... so I am bumping it for sins noobs to see.
