Dawn of Victory is a modification currently in development for the RTS/4X game; Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a “total conversion” replacing the games original models, textures, UI elements, and gameplay to create an entirely new and original experience.

It is our goal with Dawn of Victory to “maintain depth, but shift focus”, taking the things that made Sins of a Solar Empire a truly enjoyable game, and apply them to a different set of rules.

Above all, the team behind Dawn of Victory is committed to only releasing a product we can be proud of. While we pride ourselves on the quality of our art assets and aesthetics changes, we hope the true value of our mod is the unique and engaging gameplay.

The storyline behind Dawn of Victory was originally little more than an excuse to create what we thought would be a unique and fantastic backdrop for the game. Loosely based on the “WorldWar” series of books by Harry Turtledove, we wanted to take the atmosphere that made World War II games so compelling, and transport it into a space opera setting.

Over time however, our backstory has grown into an expansive universe, spanning over 300 years of alternate history. Our community driven wiki, dedicated to the story behind the mod has grown to over 500 pages, with hundreds of individual contributors.

  • New Ship Classes: Corvettes, interceptors, and more.
  • Redesigned Combat Model: Small caliber weapons may be effective against strike craft and frigates, but against heavy armor they won't make a dent.
  • Original Art Assets: Different factions have unique architectural styles and approaches to ship design. All assets have been created expressly for the mod.
  • Enhanced Ship Customization: Mount different equipment on your ships to achieve greater tactical flexibility.
  • New Doctrine Trees: Specialize your faction's approach to combat and more through purchasing unique abilities and bonuses.
  • Redesigned User Interface: The game's interface has been reimagined to fit both the style and gameplay changes inherent to Dawn of Victory.

The Soviet Union relies on overwhelming firepower rather than subtlety to achieve victory. Soviet frigates and cruisers are well rounded and cost effective, but the true strength of the Red Fleet lies in its capital ships. The Soviet economy is vulnerable however, and must be protected until it is in a position to dominate.

Kriegsmarine corvettes and frigates are the mainstay of German strategy. When properly deployed they can harass and intercept enemy units before escaping serious retribution. By denying their opponents the room to expand, the Greater German Reich can force their enemies into a vulnerable position before delivering the final blow with cruisers and capital ships.

The Democratic Federation combines the best elements of the American, Andrean, British and French fleets. Large numbers of specialized ships are available, and when properly coordinated, become effective against nearly every threat.

Applicants would ideally be familiar with UV mapping, and be proficient at recognizing existing unit styles and applying them faithfully either from a concept or working with a group to come up with a design. Models typically range from 1k to 6k polies. Each unit mesh will have only only one UV channel, as the engine limits us to one texture per mesh.

Applicants should be familiar with normal and specular maps and have a commitment to detail. The art direction of the mod calls for mostly realistic texturing with some room for stylistic exaggerations; experience with generating "greeble" and weathering are a must. Texture resolutions range from 1024 square to 4096 square.

Very clean looking too.

 

I like very much the icon's... remember me of my time in Navy and my tracking radar console... very simple but clear symbol who don't allow you to make some mistake... icon in these mod look like that have need to be in the original game...

Yeah, thanks for the words. We attempted to base most of the icons and whatnot on "APP-6A". Of course we had to make some adjustments so they were easy to read when rotating, and so they could be distinguished against other units, on the skyboxes etc.

Well, i was in Navy some year ago... using the old NTDS system... can see it page 10 at http://www.rogercooper.com/documents/FILE_N_1000508.pdf ... very interesting PDF about testing NTDS, APP-6A alike ( MIL-STD-2525B )  and 3D icon for check search time, error, etc ... anyway, military icon style is about having a good and fast view of the battlefield what game are usually wrong in their method... Sure that green or red skybox will have be a pain in the a$$ with the old NTDS symbol.

Ship and crew have completed 17 days of nearly continuous offensive action, and am happy to report both are performing well. As reported by Intelligence, enemy units within system are centered around Savelev, with only minor Kriegsmarine units deployed to outer markers.

Ship's orders included the defense of FOB AV-67 and elimination of reported enemy raiders attacking friendly shipping. Reconnaissance revealed the existence of two primary threats, Guderian-class cruiser unconfirmed as Hessen and Westfalen-class destroyer confirmed as Admiral Karl Binder. Major Dragan confirmed this information and noted that friendly units in the area (see: FOB AV-67 Garrison) were unable to penetrate the armor of either target.

First enemy contact was with German patrol unit consisting of two corvette classed vessels, both disabled almost immediately once within range. After three days of fruitless searching, arrived back at AV-67 to take on additional reconnaissance equipment. Detected German intelligence drone and disabled it before tracing origin to German destroyer Admiral Karl Binder. Shots fired from central battery sheared destroyer primary hull, nearly cutting it in two. Left adrift for recovery teams. (Grid 35, 86, 67)

After moving to engage suspected enemy supply convoy, intercepted en route by Kriegsmarine cruiser (suspected, yet not confirmed as the Hessen). Initially caught out of position and struck by roughly thirty enemy rounds, none managed to penetrate causing only superficial damage. Counter fire consisted of a single starboard broadside, detonating target's engine and resulting in a terrific explosion.

With the destruction of these two vessels, enemy forces within the area can be considered negligible.

Huzzah for the Commonwealth!

So who came up with all the British stuff in the mod? And will there be units within the Democratic Federation be noticably from one faction within it? i.e. will some of the types of ships be from the US Navy, some from the Royal Navy, etc.? I want me some British Capital Ships!

 

Wow, this gets better and better... The faction's assault rifles are like a British gun nerd's wet dream! 4.87mm rounds? Hell yeah! Wait, and they're caseless, something we were unique for in WW1? Double hell yeah!

Nice choice with the P90 and G11 style magazine intake on the LSW. Shame about the 100 round mag though... I always thought that having only 30 rounds per mag added to the useless charm of the present-day LSW.

And finally, good choice on mentioning the Coldstream Guards. My CCF's affiliated with them, so they may well be who I'm with in the future.

And to sign off, well played with giving the tanks rifled cannons. As I said, rhis is the god of sci-fi factions for all the Brits out there.
