Oh you know, a little of this, a little of that.

Dawn of Victory (DoV) is a modification currently under development by Slipstream Productions for the RTS Sins of a Solar Empire. Dawn of Victory is a total conversion, replacing the game's original assets with completely new and diverse ships, structures, and gameplay elements. Dawn of Victory pits players as one of 3 intergalactic superpowers: the Democratic Federation, Greater German Reich, and the Soviet Union. These three factions wage war amongst themselves even as a greater threat, the Scinfaxi, threaten them all.

Story

While Dawn of Victory started out loosely based on Harry Turtledove’s “Worldwar” and “Colonization” book series, since then, the backstory has expanded to the point where it has taken on a life of its own.

For centuries an alien race known as the Scinfaxi had been the dominant power in the Orion region of space, their slow but steady expansion brought them into contact with dozens of other races, each one conquered and exterminated to provide the resources and material necessary to support the continually expanding empire.

In the 14th century, the first Scinfaxi probes reached Earth: it was surveyed, catalogued, and the plans were meticulously laid for its capture and assimilation. However, the Scinfaxi concept of time was very different from humanity's, and so when the first ships of the conquest fleet arrived in 1943, they were stunned to see Terran society had progressed to an industrial state in an unimaginable sliver of time. The initial landings took humanity by surprise, as the Scinfaxi advanced upon every continent.

It was in this darkest hour that what once divided humanity now brought it together, as the old prejudices were put aside and every free nation on Earth united against the alien aggressors. The tide turned in 1945 when the Soviet Union detonated an atomic bomb on its own soil, destroying a Scinfaxi landing site.

With the total conquest of Earth impossible without destroying everything of value, the Scinfaxi retreated to the Southern hemisphere, content with half the planet. Decades went by with no contact from the Scinfaxi, but as humanity grew bolder, the aliens' plans accelerated. As spacecraft from the last free nations made landfall, and eventually colonized new worlds, the Scinfaxi slowly began to advance. City after city was lost until, in a final act of desperation, the various Terran factions agreed to pursue a literal "scorched earth" policy, sacrificing their remaining positions to nuclear bombardment and quarantining the planet.

Humanity has expanded to the stars, and dozens of planets and moons now belong to the remaining Terran nations. There has been almost no contact with the Scinfaxi, and the former nations of Earth have become so complacent with their apparent safety that the old prejudices have returned and they once again war amongst themselves. The Scinfaxi are still expanding however, and it is only a matter of time before they decide to stamp out the potential usurpers; if humanity is allowed to advance another hundred years, it may be human soldiers landing on Scinfaxi worlds. The dawn of victory is approaching: the only question is which side will claim it.

hmm i would think it would be the other way around as in WW2 all germany did was focus on their super heavy wepons programs, Tiger Tank ring a bell?

while the russians used their fast movie T-34's to go circles around them
but yor the gamecreator not me. Loving the look of the GGR ship, looks oh so kraut like.

is it too late to give ideas and HOPE they will make it into the game?
on Mar 26, 2008
The game is not a direct reflection of World War II: after all, it's been hundreds of years! The Soviets tend to be more focused on shooting everything with really big guns and hoping it hits: therefore, they have flak, which seems silly when you take it in a WWII context but makes sense in the universe.

Ideas are always welcome and many have been incorporated into the development of DoV. Anyone is free to create their own events and backstory on our wiki, and fan-submitted gameplay suggestions are always taken into account by the team.

hmm i got an idea rolling around

If you have played Age of empires 3, civilizations can create allies with minor civilizations. These mini civs can do much to add stradagy to the game, they maybey have have an additional technology to research what does good to the entire civ and possibly they have a new units that only you the civ's ally can have, these units should have only one purpose and should not be a base of an army so their numbers should be limited. So what i am proposing is that you find a inhabited neutral planet who says that they will ally with you if you can give them maybe a tech, some resources or save from marauders ect.

now when you save them they are now still independent but help you.

like the soviets find a independent mining outpost - they claim that they cant hold out forever against the nearby pirate fleet, and ask you to please help. The soviets send a salvany or two and kills off the pirates now the miners help the soviets. The miners give the unique "Plasma mining laser" - what improves metal gathering output by 5% also they can provide an improved freighter called the mining barge - much more HP and has anti fighter capabilities but is slower and build count is at a max of 5.

now this may be a bit large to implement at this stage of the beta, but neither the less it is an idea.

damn edit button never works

aanyways i was wondering for a creation of a total conversion mod what is the hardest and most time consuming part of its creation?
on Mar 27, 2008
Definitely modeling - it's easy to tweak a few things or add some new gameplay to a mini-mod, but it takes a while to get 25+ ships modeled and in-game. Thankfully, the scripting can be done in advance so you can plop in the models as they get done, but something always goes wrong with that and you always have to debug
on Mar 27, 2008

Debugging must be a bitch ... also Is japan a major or a minor civilization

what did you think of my outrageous and unacceptable idea!
on Mar 27, 2008
Minor civ for now. We're focusing on German vs Soviet at the moment - the minor civs may show up as neutral colonies or be playable as very limited factions, and there may be buyable or boardable ships from their civilizations. I'd love to make Japan a playable faction but really our focus is with the major players in the universe.

Your idea is neat, but it's a little unattainable at the moment. We can do some neat gameplay hacks with the boarding ability and research trees, though, which should give you a situation like the above.

Ok guys its been just a little short of a year into the progress of the mod (am i right about that?) and im just asking if your group has a road map of where you have gone and plan to go with the turning of SoaSE into the HT's world war sires.

But most importantly tell us the un skilled with modding and un talented with basically anything but extremely excited majority of us to help you with progress!
on Mar 28, 2008
Most of our existing models had to be drastically reskinned, with some scrapped for new designs that make full use of Sins' higher poly count, thus the longer-than-usual wait. The only way that the community can speed up the release is by helping out: we have openings for skinners and modelers.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by a road map. We have an internal design doc that lays out what ships exist in the mod, their progress, and so forth, but that will remain private.

Why not add empire of japan ? make it an Empire of Asia ? should make the whole World war 2 thing go into real total war mod

ps: are there going to be any minor races ? id love to see some

Because that wouldn't fit the universe, because most of Asia (esp. China) was overwhelmed by the Scinfaxi, and because the three major powers in the universe are much more important to get in first.

ps: are there going to be any minor races ? id love to see some

Again, it depends. It's likely anything like that will be farther down the road. The goal is to get three major factions in first. The smaller races do exist in our GalCiv II mod right now, iirc.
on Mar 28, 2008
get teh idea but doesnt the wiki in you guys site say that the japs have the near second best fleet in that universe ??? i think after the three major factions are in , they should be added

the way that i see minor races would work in this mod as a industry/military mercenary

perhaps having the ability to attack an enemy for you (pirates!) perhaps as a trade perter or as a ship/tech merchant

how are minors planned to appear as?

It's not worked out at the moment. Right now, you may see their ships buyable, though. Japan in particular produces a lot of industrial ships.
