Oh you know, a little of this, a little of that.

Dawn of Victory (DoV) is a modification currently under development by Slipstream Productions for the RTS Sins of a Solar Empire. Dawn of Victory is a total conversion, replacing the game's original assets with completely new and diverse ships, structures, and gameplay elements. Dawn of Victory pits players as one of 3 intergalactic superpowers: the Democratic Federation, Greater German Reich, and the Soviet Union. These three factions wage war amongst themselves even as a greater threat, the Scinfaxi, threaten them all.

Story

While Dawn of Victory started out loosely based on Harry Turtledove’s “Worldwar” and “Colonization” book series, since then, the backstory has expanded to the point where it has taken on a life of its own.

For centuries an alien race known as the Scinfaxi had been the dominant power in the Orion region of space, their slow but steady expansion brought them into contact with dozens of other races, each one conquered and exterminated to provide the resources and material necessary to support the continually expanding empire.

In the 14th century, the first Scinfaxi probes reached Earth: it was surveyed, catalogued, and the plans were meticulously laid for its capture and assimilation. However, the Scinfaxi concept of time was very different from humanity's, and so when the first ships of the conquest fleet arrived in 1943, they were stunned to see Terran society had progressed to an industrial state in an unimaginable sliver of time. The initial landings took humanity by surprise, as the Scinfaxi advanced upon every continent.

It was in this darkest hour that what once divided humanity now brought it together, as the old prejudices were put aside and every free nation on Earth united against the alien aggressors. The tide turned in 1945 when the Soviet Union detonated an atomic bomb on its own soil, destroying a Scinfaxi landing site.

With the total conquest of Earth impossible without destroying everything of value, the Scinfaxi retreated to the Southern hemisphere, content with half the planet. Decades went by with no contact from the Scinfaxi, but as humanity grew bolder, the aliens' plans accelerated. As spacecraft from the last free nations made landfall, and eventually colonized new worlds, the Scinfaxi slowly began to advance. City after city was lost until, in a final act of desperation, the various Terran factions agreed to pursue a literal "scorched earth" policy, sacrificing their remaining positions to nuclear bombardment and quarantining the planet.

Humanity has expanded to the stars, and dozens of planets and moons now belong to the remaining Terran nations. There has been almost no contact with the Scinfaxi, and the former nations of Earth have become so complacent with their apparent safety that the old prejudices have returned and they once again war amongst themselves. The Scinfaxi are still expanding however, and it is only a matter of time before they decide to stamp out the potential usurpers; if humanity is allowed to advance another hundred years, it may be human soldiers landing on Scinfaxi worlds. The dawn of victory is approaching: the only question is which side will claim it.

"We will bury you."`Nikita Khrushchev.Seriously though, this mod is turning out to be incredible. Will you guys be using custom explosions?

Hopefully we'll be using a lot if not all custom particles.

Sparda: the Soviets are focused on early game rushing and exploration, their corvettes are relatively weak but they get some ships like the Slavny early. Their early game is about getting as much territory as possible. Their mid-game isn't that interesting, so we've thrown in some surprises. Finally, their end-game is their comeuppance with their extremely powerful capital ships.

The Germans focus on early to mid game, with a lot of their powerful stuff going into corvettes rather than frigates or cruisers. However, their ships are (as pointed out earlier) more "elite", so you tend to have less of them. They need to lock down a few planets and keep them upgraded: they can't compete with the USSR's expansion, but they get cheap territorial upgrades and a propaganda advantage. Their railguns, though, are built to take apart big ships, so there's a bit of soft-counters in there.

The DF is focused on mid/late game cruisers and frigates, as well as their advantage in fighter squadrons...they have lots of armor bonuses so they'll play similarly to the Advent in that respect. With a focus on both their buffs and support ships, it'll take quite a bit of micro to play these guys. Thankfully, DoV is built in a way (shift depth) that micro is not a game-killing concern like it would be in base Sins, there's a lot of streamlining the gameplay to make this much easier.

As for the Scinfaxi, we haven't quite decided how they'll work.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I know what the factions are like now. I will still be the DF when this comes out, even though I hate microing. And I've been reading the Worldwar books by Harry Turtledove and while you are similar and do take a lot of ideas from him, they are excellent and work very well. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and I believe the storyline here will work out great.

Good luck with the mod, I look forward to killing you soon. Hiiiiyyaaaa!!!

Will you have open or internal alpha and beta? If internal, could I be a part of it

The goal is to get most of the bugs sorted out in internal alpha/beta. I don't like the dichotomy between "public beta" and "release". What we release will be as bug-free as we make it, as we're focused on implementing two working, full factions rather than a bunch of buggy ones.

I think a lot of balance issues will be found in release but we're going to try our best to fully playtest that.

The point is that like most mods, there will be release candidates that are not perfect and we'll rely on the community to find the ones we can't. There will likely be no "closed community" beta.

As Carbon mentioned, factions in DoV should more or less parallel their WWII equivalent. For example, the Soviet Union is an early game economic cripple, but if they manage to fight it out, late game they will have some of the heaviest capitals available. Many people forget that by the end of WWII the Soviet Union had the best tanks in the world. (The IS3 comes to mind)

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned too often is that the Democratic Federation is actually about a dozen countries, and most will be represented in game. This leads the DF to the greatest variety of units and multiple ways of dealing with threats. With Royal Navy battleships, American Strikecraft, French Corvettes or whatnot.

That sounds awesome Swiss Knight!

This mod looks really good.

Cant wait for it.

Anyone heard a joke about french tanks gear?? 1 gear forward, 5 backward.
I think it may be interesting if french corvette could be accurate to this joke......................coz in space this actually might work quite well (like having most firepower mounder at rear section of ship) it would be good "retreat escort" or chase harrasing unit.

I don't think we're going to pander to inaccurate military stereotypes. The mines already work as "cover-your-ass" weapons and the firing arc system in Sins is far from perfect in this respect. The corvettes can also bank and accelerate at speeds that let them get away from other ships quite easily.

Also though Swiss Knight, The Germans were still making some of the best tanks in the world late war even when they had become economically crippled. So roles had reversed, but German Engineering is still a little better. Some of the strikecraft the Germans were working on would take the Russians nearly 50+ years to get into the sky. The Su-47 comes to mind here.

And Sparda, in World War II the German's unit's were far more elite and agile than the Allied forces. The Allies did the mass production almost to the level of the Russians. American tanks won when they outnumbered the Germans 4-1. A Panther tank could take on handfuls of American tanks by itself.

Should Germany not be a late game faction as well as the Russians? I ask this largely because given the resources Germany Technology grows exponentially the longer it has to fight. They would also build ridiculous things like the 500 crew, train transisted artillery.

When you have control of the skies, a lighter tank designed to provide anti-infantry firepower and move quickly (the sherman, which due to a bad american tank doctrine sucked against tanks) actually becomes rather useful. The DR should take that focus on fighters with them (as long as the US navy's proud tradition of carrier spamming like other navies spammed destroyers), while Germany should be faced with massive costs from their infeasible super-projects, if we want to take the WWII thing to the limit, but I'd say just let the team decide what they want to make . I'm sure that they have a good idea.

They of course have fantastic ideas. But offering ideas doesn't hurt as long as they are at least a little helpful. Plus I imagine they grin if/when we ask for something they've got in the works under secret.

Would like a new update soon though.
